WTA roundup: Yafan Wang wins Austin opener, Cornet knocked out

Yafan Wang caused a surprise in the opening round of the ATX Open in Austin, Texas, on Monday by defeating Italy's fourth-seeded Lucia Bronzetti 7-6, 6-4.
Wang dominated her first-serve points, winning 81 percent of them, and managed to save four out of five break points against her. However, she missed out on three set points during Bronzetti's serve at 5-4 in the first set, eventually needing two more set points to secure the tiebreaker. In the second set, Wang capitalized on a lone break to take a 3-2 lead.
Moving on to other matches in the opening round, fifth-seeded Diane Parry triumphed over Jessika Ponchet in an all-French matchup with a score of 6-3, 7-6. Eighth-seeded Yue Yuan of China staged a comeback against Australia's Arina Rodionova, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, Colombia's Camila Osorio dominated France's Alize Cornet with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
At the San Diego Open, Canada's Marina Stakusic secured a victory against Russia's Marina Melnikova in a first-round qualifier matchup. Stakusic, ranked 283rd in the world, won with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. Notably, Stakusic had a significant advantage in aces, leading 4-0, and also won 78 percent of Melnikova's second-serve points. In the next round, Stakusic will face either seventh-seeded Croatian Donna Vekic or Katherine Hui, a 19-year-old wildcard entrant from San Diego.
Other first-round winners included Xinyu Wang from China, Daria Saville from Australia, Katie Boulter from Great Britain, and Jule Niemeier from Germany. In the final match of the night, sixth-seeded Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine outlasted US qualifier Ann Li with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
