Xabi Alonso appointed Real Madrid Head Coach on 3-Year deal until 2028

Real Madrid have officially reached an agreement with Xabi Alonso to become the club’s next head coach. The 43-year-old Spanish tactician has signed a three-year contract running until 2028, replacing Carlo Ancelotti, who will step down at the end of the current La Liga season.
This marks a significant homecoming for Alonso, who spent five successful seasons at Real Madrid as a player and is now set to begin a new managerial chapter at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Monday, posting via X (formerly Twitter):
“Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, here we go! Story confirmed and deal sealed for Xabi as new manager until 2028.”
Romano added that all details, including Alonso’s backroom staff, have been finalized, and that the former Bayer Leverkusen boss is expected to start his role in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, where Real Madrid are tipped to participate as likely Champions League winners.
Alonso has enjoyed a meteoric rise in his managerial career. After a successful stint with Real Sociedad B, he took over Bayer Leverkusen, transforming them into one of the most exciting sides in Europe and leading them to a historic Bundesliga title.
Just days ago, Alonso emotionally bid farewell to Leverkusen fans during their final home game of the season, confirming his decision to move on — and now we know why.
End of the Ancelotti Era
Carlo Ancelotti’s departure marks the end of another illustrious spell at Real Madrid. The Italian has guided Los Blancos to multiple Champions League and La Liga titles, but a trophyless final season has paved the way for a smooth transition.
“Ancelotti farewell soon, then Xabi era,” Romano concluded.
