Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau to lead US charge at Presidents Cup

American golfers Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau are set to compete against the international pairing of Jason Day and An Byeong-hun in the first of five fourball matches during the opening session of the Presidents Cup on Thursday in Montreal.

This season has marked a significant breakthrough for Schauffele from Southern California, who has achieved victories at both the PGA Championship and the British Open, currently holding a career-high ranking of second in the world.

Meanwhile, Australia's Day is determined to improve upon his unsatisfactory 5-11-4 record from four previous Presidents Cup appearances, seeking to gain momentum alongside the powerful South Korean player An.

US captain Jim Furyk has chosen Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala for the second match, while International Team captain Mike Weir has responded by selecting Australian golfers Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee.

In the third match of the day, world number one Scottie Scheffler and fellow American Russell Henley will take on the South Korean duo of Im Sung-jae and Tom Kim.

Canadian golfer Taylor Pendrith is expected to receive a warm reception from the crowd at Royal Montreal Golf Club as he partners with South Africa's Christiaan Bezuidenhout to face Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley in the fourth match.

The first day of this three-day competition will conclude with Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns going up against Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and Canada's Corey Conners.

Historically, the US has dominated this biennial event with a record of 12-1-1 and remains the strong favorite, despite facing a more seasoned International Team.

The International squad features eight returning players from their 2022 lineup, aiming to break a Presidents Cup drought that dates back to their sole victory at Royal Melbourne in 1998.

While the US team has experienced more changes, it includes five of the top ten players in the world, with all twelve members ranked within the top 25, whereas the highest-ranked player on the International Team is Matsuyama, who is currently ranked seventh.
