Xavi says Barcelona project behind decision to stay, not money

Barcelona's manager, Xavi Hernandez (44), expressed his determination to continue his tenure at the club, emphasizing that his decision to retract his resignation and remain in charge for the 2024-25 season was not driven by financial motives. Xavi stated that he still had unfulfilled objectives with Barcelona, highlighting his commitment to achieving success with the team.
Xavi, seated beside club president Joan Laporta and sports director Deco at a press conference on Thursday, expressed his satisfaction with the team's recent progress and morale. He acknowledged the significant improvement in performance and spirit over the past two months.
The former Barcelona midfielder had dedicated most of the previous day to meetings with club officials. Barca had announced on Wednesday that Xavi, who had previously stated his intention to step down at the end of the season, would fulfill the final year of his contract after agreeing to certain conditions set by the club.
"Making this decision was not easy. Back in January, I believed it was the best choice for the club, but circumstances have changed, and now I see continuity as the optimal path," Xavi explained.
He emphasized his belief in the team's potential to develop into a winning project. "I am deeply convinced and excited. Everything has changed from three months ago to now," he added.
Xavi dismissed rumors about requesting a release clause in his contract, stating that he wouldn't ask for any compensation to step down. Club president Laporta echoed Xavi's sentiments, emphasizing that the decision was not motivated by money but by a desire for the club's well-being.
"I confirm what Xavi has said. Money was not a factor in this decision; it was a sporting and institutional choice," Laporta affirmed.
Xavi's decision to step down in January had initially surprised many, as he had mentioned feeling "liberated" due to the pressures of the job. However, his initial announcement seemed to have a positive effect, with Barca going unbeaten in their next 13 games.
Despite recent defeats, including a loss to Real Madrid and elimination from the Champions League, Laporta expressed unwavering faith in Xavi's abilities.
"I am convinced that Xavi is the right person for the job. We must continue to believe in our project, which is rooted in Barcelona's identity and beliefs," Laporta stated.
Xavi's legacy at Barcelona is significant, having played for the club for 17 years, winning numerous trophies. His decision to stay has brought renewed hope to fans and players alike as they aim to finish the season strongly.
