Xavi to continue as Barcelona manager next season, LaLiga club confirms

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, aged 44, has decided to retract his initial plan of stepping down at the end of the season and has agreed to remain in charge of the LaLiga giants for the 2024-25 season, as confirmed by a club spokesperson to Reuters.

After engaging in meetings with Barcelona officials throughout the day, Xavi has agreed to fulfill the final year of his contract under certain unspecified conditions set by the club, according to sources.

Xavi is scheduled to address the media on Sunday ahead of their LaLiga match against Valencia, while club president Joan Laporta is anticipated to hold a press conference on Thursday to discuss the recent development.

"Xavi will be continuing and is filled with enthusiasm; there is a consensus among the club's board that he should carry on," stated club vice-president Rafa Yuste to reporters outside Laporta's residence in Barcelona later on Wednesday.

Having played for Barcelona for 17 years, Xavi made 767 appearances and secured 25 trophies, which included four Champions League titles and eight LaLiga championships.

Despite his legendary status at the club and winning LaLiga last season, Barcelona's inconsistent performance this season has placed him under scrutiny.

When Xavi initially announced his decision to step down in January, he expressed a sense of liberation. He explained that the pressure and demands of his position prevented him from enjoying his time at his beloved club.

Xavi emphasized that his choice was made in the best interest of the team, believing that it would free up the players moving forward.

Although his words faced criticism from pundits, they seemed to have a positive impact as Barcelona remained unbeaten in their next 13 competitive matches.

However, the team's recent two defeats have resulted in a season without any trophies. A 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in LaLiga left them trailing their bitter rivals by 11 points with only six games remaining.

This defeat followed their heartbreaking elimination from the Champions League, where they suffered a 4-1 loss against Paris Saint-Germain.

According to sources, Xavi was assured by Laporta that there would be no major changes in his staff, and the club would still have the ability to sign top-level players despite their financial difficulties.

Barcelona faces challenges due to their significant wage bill and the ongoing 1.6 billion-euro renovation project at Camp Nou.

This could potentially make the upcoming transfer market a challenging one for Xavi, as they may be compelled to sell key players in order to meet LaLiga's financial control requirements.
