Yamal already vital to Barcelona’s success as youngster prepares to shine against Benfica

Barcelona's previous encounter with Benfica resulted in a significant defeat, leading to their elimination from the Champions League group stage in 2021. However, with the emergence of young talent Lamine Yamal, the prospects for the Catalan club are considerably more optimistic this time.
Currently positioned second in the group, trailing only Liverpool, Barcelona has the opportunity to secure their advancement to the knockout stage on Tuesday at the Estadio da Luz, thereby bypassing the newly introduced play-off round.
At that time, Ronald Koeman's team was experiencing a low point, culminating in his dismissal shortly after the 3-0 loss in Lisbon. His successor, Xavi Hernandez, managed to stabilize the team to some extent before departing in 2024, as Barcelona continued to face challenges in their performance.
Xavi played a pivotal role in nurturing Yamal, who has now become a central figure in Hansi Flick's dynamic squad, demonstrating their capability to compete against Europe's elite.
This season, Barcelona has triumphed over the reigning Champions League champions, Real Madrid, on two occasions in La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, in addition to defeating the formidable Bayern Munich earlier in the group stage.
Despite ongoing financial difficulties, highlighted by the recent issues surrounding Dani Olmo's registration, Barcelona's on-field performance, when at their peak, showcases their ability to deliver exceptional football.
Yamal has been instrumental in this success, showing remarkable consistency and growth after contributing to Spain's Euro 2024 victory last summer.
The talented winger, often likened to Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, who also emerged from the La Masia academy, is currently performing at a level that few can match in the global football arena.
"Indeed, he is," remarked his teammate Gavi when asked if Yamal ranks as the best player in the world. "Well, after Lionel Messi, he's the best."
Recognized as a significant talent, Yamal's agility and skill render him Barcelona's most formidable threat, having accumulated nine goals and 13 assists in 25 matches across all competitions. Meanwhile, Raphinha has also had an impressive season, proving to be crucial in the attacking front.
The Brazilian winger, who was rumored to leave last summer, has worked diligently to demonstrate his value, scoring 20 goals and providing 11 assists in 29 matches.
Gavi has made a strong comeback from a long-term injury, while Pedri is enjoying his best form in midfield. Additionally, 17-year-old center-back Pau Cubarsi has proven to be a significant asset in defense.
Nevertheless, the absence of Yamal is keenly felt in the team's performance, as highlighted by several matches he missed due to injury or was rested. Without the winger in the starting lineup, Barcelona suffered defeats against Osasuna, Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo, Las Palmas, and Atletico Madrid in La Liga, resulting in a drop to third place after having led the standings for several weeks.
"I believe that in crucial matches, exceptional talent is evident, and he has demonstrated this on numerous occasions," remarked Barcelona coach Hansi Flick following Yamal's impressive performance against Real Betis in the Copa del Rey last week. "He is on an excellent trajectory."
With Yamal included in the lineup, Barcelona has only lost twice this season, achieving 19 victories and two draws. One of those losses occurred against Monaco in the Champions League in September, but Barcelona rebounded by winning their next five European matches.
Yamal and Barcelona aim for another victory in Lisbon to secure their place among the top eight, reminding everyone that, a decade after their last triumph, the five-time champions remain contenders among Europe's elite.
