Yastremska beats Noskova to reach Australian Open semi-finals

On Wednesday, Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska effortlessly defeated unseeded Czech Linda Noskova, making history as the second women's qualifier in the Open Era to advance to the semi-finals at the Australian Open.
In scorching conditions on Rod Laver Arena, the 93rd-ranked player in the world broke her opponent's serve three times to secure a 6-3, 6-4 victory in just 78 minutes. This win sets up a semifinal clash against either unseeded Russian Anna Kalinskaya or Chinese 12th seed Zheng Qinwen.
Yastremska's achievement is noteworthy as she becomes the first women's qualifier to reach the semifinals at the season-opening Grand Slam since Australia's Christine Matison in 1978. Reflecting on this historic moment, she expressed her joy, stating, "It's nice to make history, especially considering I wasn't even born at that time. It's a great feeling to be part of the next generation and contribute to making history. I'm incredibly happy."
Despite her success, Yastremska humbly acknowledged that she didn't feel like she played exceptionally well. She attributed her performance to playing to her capabilities and fighting through fatigue.
Yastremska faced a challenging path to the main draw at Melbourne Park, as she had to battle through three qualifying matches that went the distance. However, she elevated her game when the Grand Slam began, defeating Wimbledon champion and seventh seed Marketa Vondrousova in the first round and eliminating two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round.
Her opponent in the quarterfinals, Czech world number 50 Noskova, also had notable victories of her own, including a third-round upset against world number one Iga Swiatek. Noskova initially took the lead by breaking Yastremska's serve in the third game, but Yastremska quickly responded to level the score at 2-2. Yastremska then secured a crucial break in the eighth game, allowing her to serve out the set and claim it without any errors.
The turning point in the second set occurred in the seventh game when Yastremska unleashed a powerful backhand winner, breaking Noskova's serve. From there, she comfortably sealed the victory.
Yastremska, 23 years old with a career-high ranking of 21, faced a doping controversy in June 2021. However, she successfully appealed the failed test and was cleared of any wrongdoing. With three WTA singles titles to her name, Yastremska becomes the first qualifier since Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open to reach the quarter
