Yavi wins 3,000m steeplechase gold after dramatic finish against Chemutai

Winfred Yavi of Bahrain secured the gold medal in the women's Olympic 3,000 metres steeplechase on Tuesday, successfully unseating Uganda's Peruth Chemutai, who finished with the silver medal.
Yavi expressed her elation upon crossing the finish line, having surged past Chemutai in a powerful final sprint that left the Ugandan, who had maintained the lead for the majority of the race, unable to respond.
Chemutai was visibly emotional after Yavi, 24, clinched the victory, thereby adding the Olympic title to her world championship title from the previous year, while also setting a new Olympic record of 8 minutes 52.76 seconds.
"This feels like a dream come true. It is something truly special," Yavi remarked to the media. "This achievement holds great significance for me and for my country as well."
Faith Cherotich, a 20-year-old from Kenya and ranked third in the world, earned the bronze medal in her Olympic debut.
Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya initially took the lead and was closely matched with Chemutai but fell behind in the final lap, ultimately finishing in sixth place. Meanwhile, France's Alice Finot celebrated her fourth-place finish in a notably swift race.
Chepkoech, aged 33, holds the world record at 8:44.32 but has yet to secure an Olympic medal in this event.
In the Tokyo Olympics, it was Chemutai who caused an upset by winning the gold medal, defeating the favored Chepkoech and becoming the first Ugandan woman to earn an Olympic medal in any sport.
