Young Boys 0-1 Crvena Zvezda: Red Star snatch victory as hosts end campaign pointless

Red Star Belgrade concluded their 13-match winless streak in away fixtures within the UEFA Champions League (UCL)/European Cup by securing a 1-0 victory against Young Boys, who finished the league phase without a single win.
With both teams already out of contention for the competition, there was a significant risk that this concluding match of the league phase would lack excitement, as only pride was at stake.
Nonetheless, Young Boys' manager Giorgio Contini, who was appointed in December to revitalize a faltering season, hoped that achieving a first victory in European football's premier tournament would serve as a catalyst for improvement.
Following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Celtic the previous week, Contini indicated that this match was about "gathering insights for the way forward," yet neither team gained substantial knowledge during a subdued first half.
After an unmarked Darian Males directed a header straight at Ivan Gutesa from within the penalty area, Cherif Ndiaye squandered a prime opportunity for the visitors just before halftime, as he failed to convert Silas' cross from close range, sending his shot over the bar.
Despite being the home team, Young Boys struggled to make a significant impact offensively, which was disappointing given their objective to please their supporters.
Their uninspired performance was ultimately punished with just over 20 minutes left in the match when Guelor Kanga received the ball 25 yards from goal. The substitute midfielder unleashed a powerful first-time shot that found the back of the net, granting The Red-Whites a lead they rightfully earned.
This UCL campaign has been a challenging experience for the Swiss team, and there was no resurgence for the hosts, who managed only two shots on target in the second half.
Contini's team holds the unfortunate distinction of concluding the league phase at the bottom of the standings, whereas Red Star managed to end their campaign on a positive note.
