Young Boys 0-3 Aston Villa: Villans make happy return to Champions League with away victory

Aston Villa, former European champions, commenced the newly restructured 36-team UEFA Champions League with a commanding 3-0 victory against BSC Young Boys at the Stadion Wankdorf.
In their inaugural matchup, the reigning champions of the Swiss Super League, Young Boys, started energetically as Emiliano Martinez skillfully denied Filip Ugrinic’s free-kick and Ebrima Colley’s close-range attempt within the first 12 minutes.
Shortly thereafter, Colley unleashed a powerful shot that narrowly missed the crossbar, just above the head of the FIFA World Cup-winning goalkeeper.
However, against the flow of the game, Villa took the lead in the 27th minute. A well-executed set-piece, crafted by set-piece coach Austin Macphee, allowed Youri Tielemans to elegantly direct John McGinn’s delivery into the far corner of the net.
After scoring their first-ever goal in the Champions League, Ollie Watkins squandered a prime opportunity to increase the visitors’ advantage, shooting frustratingly wide of the post.
Following Jacob Ramsey’s attempt that went directly at David von Ballmoos, fortune smiled upon the attacker as he found himself on the scoresheet.
A careless back pass from Mohamed Ali Camara to his goalkeeper within the six-yard box resulted in a foul on Watkins, enabling Ramsey to slot the ball into an unguarded net.
The situation nearly improved for Unai Emery’s team five minutes later when Watkins struck a half-volley past Von Ballmoos, but VAR intervened, prompting referee Georgi Kabakov to reverse his initial decision due to a contentious handball.
Aiming for their first European victory against Swiss rivals on neutral ground (D1, L1), Villa was quick to pose a threat after the interval, with Tielemans, the scorer of the opening goal, forcing a commendable save from Von Ballmoos.
The captain of YB was again compelled to keep his team in contention shortly thereafter, as he tipped Ramsey’s shot over the crossbar.
With just ten minutes remaining, Villa had another goal ruled out when substitute Jhon Duran's exuberant celebrations were abruptly halted due to a handball by Amadou Onana.
However, the visitors ultimately secured their third goal of the evening, with Onana delivering a magnificent strike that found its way into the bottom corner.
This victory, marked by three goals and three points, signifies an ideal beginning for Villa in their UEFA Champions League debut. Emery's squad had previously played three Premier League matches before resuming their European journey with a rematch of the 1982 final against Bayern Munich—the first encounter since that memorable night in Rotterdam.
In contrast, the defeat leaves Young Boys with only one previous victory against English teams in the competition.
