Yuan Yue defeats Wang Xiyu in Austin to capture first WTA title

Yuan Yue, the eighth seed, emerged victorious in a thrilling battle against the sixth seed, Wang Xiyu, with a score of 6-4, 7-6(4). This remarkable victory secured Yuan Yue her maiden WTA title on Sunday, as she triumphed in an all-Chinese final at the ATX Open.
Yuan required a total of two hours and 13 minutes, as well as seven championship points, to overcome Wang in their intense match at Austin, Texas. Wang had managed to rally from being 5-2 down in the second set, forcing a tie-break. It is worth noting that this was Yuan's second appearance in a WTA final, with her previous loss occurring in October last year against American Jessica Pegula in Seoul.
This final marked the first time since 2018 that two Chinese players competed against each other in a WTA final. The last occurrence was when Wang Qiang defeated Zheng Saisai to claim the Nanchang crown. Furthermore, it was the first time in over a decade that an all-Chinese final took place outside of Asia. The previous instance was in 2006, when Zheng Jie emerged victorious over Li Na in the Estoril championship match.
Yuan, ranked 68th in the world, displayed great resilience by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to win the first set. She successfully saved five out of six break chances against the 64th-ranked Wang, while also converting both of her own opportunities. Yuan ultimately secured the set with a forehand winner.
In the second set, Wang managed to fight back and force a tie-break, despite being on the verge of defeat. However, Yuan quickly gained a significant advantage in the decider, leading 6-1. Although Wang saved three match points, Yuan ultimately emerged as the victor.
Unfortunately for Wang, this match denied her the opportunity to claim her second career WTA title. Her previous triumph occurred in September last year at the Guangzhou Open, which was her only other appearance in a tour final.
