Zimbabwe Coach Nees Warns Nigeria Ahead of High-Stakes World Cup Qualifier

Michael Nees, head coach of the Zimbabwe national team, has issued a bold statement ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria, suggesting that if Zimbabwe’s qualification hopes are over, then so are Nigeria’s.

The Super Eagles will host the Warriors in a crucial Group C encounter on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, with both teams desperate for a win to stay in contention for a World Cup spot.

Nees Taunts ‘Wounded Lion’ Nigeria

Zimbabwe’s qualifying campaign took a serious hit after a 2-2 draw with Benin Republic in Durban, despite initially trailing 2-0. Goals from Marshall Munetsi and Knowledge Musona salvaged a point, but the result left them winless in the group.

Despite their struggles, Nees remains defiant, taking a subtle jab at Nigeria’s shaky form under coach Finidi George.

“If our World Cup qualification is over, then Nigeria’s is also over. You have just one point more than Lesotho,”

“The qualification is only over when there’s no theoretical chance anymore. The group is still wide open.”

With five matches remaining and 15 points up for grabs, Nees stressed that no team is safe from either elimination or resurgence.

Uyo: A Fortress or a False Hope?

While acknowledging Nigeria’s strengths, Nees also questioned the Super Eagles’ dominance at home, particularly at Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio Stadium, which has witnessed some unexpected defeats.

“Uyo is a challenge for any team, but remember, the Super Eagles have lost a couple of games there,” Nees noted.

Labeling Nigeria as a “wounded lion”, the German tactician suggested that the Super Eagles are better than their current position suggests but have struggled to show their quality in this campaign.

Zimbabwe’s Uphill Battle for World Cup Qualification

Zimbabwe currently sits at the bottom of Group C with just three points from five matches, yet to register a single win. Their World Cup dream hangs by a thread, and failing to beat Nigeria could spell the end of their campaign.

Nees, who took charge of the Warriors in 2024, replacing Jairos Tapera, believes his extensive African football experience including stints with Seychelles, Rwanda, and South Africa can help turn things around.

“Football is not only decided on the pitch but by many factors, especially at the national team level. I bring a versatile experience that I believe will help Zimbabwe,” he stated.

Zimbabwe Captain Munetsi: ‘We Are Here to Make History’

Despite being underdogs, Warriors captain Marshall Munetsi insists that Zimbabwe is determined to fight for history.

“Nigeria is a bigger football nation, but Zimbabwe qualifying for the World Cup would be more historic for us than Nigeria qualifying,” Munetsi declared at the pre-match press conference.

“We know we haven’t started qualification well, but we are here to compete, not for leisure. We want to leave a legacy.”

While Nigeria enjoys home advantage, Munetsi stressed that Zimbabwe is motivated to defy the odds and keep their World Cup dream alive.
