Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram shine against Denver Nuggets

In a thrilling NBA matchup, the dynamic duo of Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, prominent stars for the New Orleans Pelicans, not only orchestrated a commanding lead, putting the Denver Nuggets in a daunting 20-point deficit but also exhibited their prowess in the crucial final minutes to thwart Nikola Jokic and his team from staging a complete comeback.
Williamson showcased his scoring prowess with an impressive 26 points, while Ingram contributed 21, ultimately guiding the Pelicans to a hard-fought 115-110 victory on a Friday night filled with suspense. The Nuggets, demonstrating resilience, managed to narrow the gap to just a single point with 4:01 remaining, setting the stage for a nail-biting conclusion.
Ingram, reflecting on the challenge of facing the defending NBA champions, stated, "We didn't want it to get all the way to that point, but we had to stay poised." The late-game heroics unfolded as both Williamson and Ingram orchestrated a pivotal 8-0 run, sealing the victory for the Pelicans. Notably, their performance elevated when it mattered most, quashing Denver's hopes of a dramatic turnaround.
The climax of the game saw missed 3-point attempts by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Reggie Jackson, and Aaron Gordon for the Nuggets during a single possession in the final 30 seconds. A crucial out-of-bounds call against Denver with 15 seconds left, following Gordon's miss, provided an opening for the Pelicans. Herb Jones capitalized on this opportunity, sinking two free throws after being fouled on an inbound pass with 13.5 seconds on the clock.
“We definitely got it going when we needed to,” emphasized Williamson, highlighting the synergy between him and Ingram. The Pelicans' victory marked their second consecutive win in the NBA In-Season Tournament, propelling them to a 2-1 record in West Group B, a position shared with Denver. The possibility of winning their bracket against the Clippers in Los Angeles looms large on November 24.
Speaking on the tournament's significance, Williamson expressed the team's motivation, saying, "That's something that you can give to family members or whatever you plan on doing with it. I think that's good motivation." He added, “But also, for us, we haven't won nothing. So, I think that would be like a starter step for us, trying to go and win that.”
On the opposing side, Nikola Jokic's stellar performance included 26 points, a career-high 18 assists, and an impressive 16 rebounds. Despite his efforts, the Nuggets found themselves trailing throughout the game, never managing to take the lead. Christian Braun contributed 24 points, and Michael Porter Jr. added 18 points along with 11 rebounds.
While New Orleans led by a substantial 20 points during the third quarter, the Nuggets mounted a spirited comeback with three consecutive 3-pointers, narrowing the gap to 95-86 by the end of the third period. Nuggets coach Mike Malone emphasized the need to avoid early deficits, stating, “My main theme of this game is that we cannot build ourselves a hole like that, knowing that we are going to get the best of everybody.”
Despite Denver's efforts to stay within single digits in the fourth quarter, the Pelicans secured the win, with Williamson and Ingram taking control during a decisive stretch. Williamson's finger roll and floater, coupled with Ingram's mid-range jumper, solidified a 111-102 lead with 1:50 remaining.
Other notable contributions for the Pelicans included Jonas Valanciunas scoring 22 points, Naji Marshall delivering 12 points with four 3-pointers, and Dyson Daniels finishing with 10 points. On the Nuggets' side, Aaron Gordon and Reggie Jackson each scored 14 points.
Looking ahead, the Nuggets are set to face Cleveland on Sunday, while the Pelicans will host Minnesota on Saturday in what promises to be another exciting NBA showdown.
