Zverev assault trial to open as he contests French Open last 32

A Berlin court is set to commence the hearing of an appeal by Alexander Zverev (27) against a fine for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend on Friday, while the German tennis star participates in the French Open.
Zverev, the fourth-ranked player in the world, was fined 450,000 euros (£382,000) in October but has contested the decision.
Last week, the German stated that he would not attend the start of the proceedings in Berlin, which coincides with the two-week French Open.
"I have faith in the German system," he informed reporters. He was not required to appear in person in the Berlin court.
The purported victim, however, has been asked to provide testimony at the beginning of the trial, which is expected to run until mid-July.
Zverev is accused of briefly choking his former partner with both hands during an argument in Berlin in May 2020, according to the court.
The alleged victim reportedly experienced breathing difficulties and significant pain as a result, as per the court.
Court clash
Earlier this week, Zverev defeated Rafael Nadal in the first round of the French Open, potentially marking the end of the tennis legend's participation in the tournament that he has dominated over the years.
On Thursday, Zverev progressed to the last 32 by defeating Belgian David Goffin in the second round.
The German is aiming for his first Grand Slam title and has been in good form during this year's clay court season, having won the Italian Open in Rome earlier this month.
However, Zverev's legal issues have cast a shadow over his title pursuit, with journalists questioning him about his upcoming court appearance.
"I have faith in the German system. I also believe in the truth. I am aware of my actions, and I trust that the truth will prevail in the end," the tennis player stated to reporters last week.
The woman involved in the case has not been identified by the court, but Zverev's defense previously identified her as Brenda Patea.
In January 2023, the ATP concluded its investigation into domestic abuse allegations against Zverev with a female tennis player due to lack of evidence.
The ATP initiated the investigation into Zverev in October 2021 based on accusations from his ex-girlfriend, Olya Sharypova.
